One of the things that I struggle with the most in the winter months is dry skin. When the temperature drops, so does the humidity which means there’s less moisture in the air. While the drier air is tough on skin, add the constant running of the furnace heat and winter winds, your skin can become flaky, itchy, cracking and even cause redness. The good news is that dull, dry skin doesn’t have to be your norm during the winter months. There are some simple tips you can take and add into your daily routine to help combat dry winter skin! Give these tips a try to fight against the wintertime dull and dry skin battle and keep skin soft and smooth!

Simple Ways To Combat & Revive Dry Skin This Winter:

Shorter & Cooler Showers

When it’s cold outside it can be so tempting to turn the shower on as hot as tolerable or to dip into a hot bath, but the hot water and longer durations can have detrimental effects on your skin. It can strip away the natural oils that help keep our skin moisturized. So, try opting for shorter, lukewarm showers and baths.

Avoid Products with Harsh Ingredients

Be wary of using too many ingredients that contain salicylic acid or retinol as they can have drying effects on your skin. Parabens and petroleum products are another no-nos as they can further dry skin. When looking for products, I opt for natural beauty when possible (especially love vegan products) and cold-pressed oils for their hydrating properties.

One of my newest, favorite brands for skincare is Nature Box™! Nature Box™ is a new brand of skin and beauty care products that use cold pressed oils and sustainable ingredients in their products. The beauty of cold pressed oils is that they are produced by exerting pressure to extract the oils without chemicals or hot processes for a more natural, and refined product. Nature Box™ has five different lines, creating from the following 100% cold pressed oils:

  • Avocado: for replenished skin
  • Apricot: for glowing skin
  • Macadamia: for nourished skin
  • Almond: for sensitive skin
  • Coconut: for hydrated skin
Additionally, all of Nature Box™ products are vegan and many are free of sulfates, silicones, parabens, and artificial colors. The inclusion of cold pressed oils in their products make these products great to use in the winter time for the great hydrating and healing attributes that they have on skin. Use Gentle Cleansers

A gentle cleanser is a must in winter! You want something that gently cleanses and can hydrate at the same time. My cleanser of choice is Nature Box™ 100% Cold Pressed Avocado Oil Body Wash. I love that it’s paraben free (parabens can further dry out skin) and the avocado oil (plus Vitamin E) is great for replenishing my dry skin.

Hydrate Immediately

Within minutes of getting out of the shower or tub, hydrate with a high-quality lotion or body butter to seal in moisture. After I pat dry, I try to apply Nature Box™ Body Lotion with cold-pressed avocado oil within the first 5 minutes of jumping out of the shower to keep my skin replenished and soft all day long. Aside from being super moisturizing, Nature Box™ Avocado lotion smells so good too while also being petroleum free!

Give Special Care to Dry Areas

Elbows, knees, hands, and feet are more susceptible to becoming dry and irritated. For those areas, use a heavier moisturizer, like a body butter or oil. I’ve been spritzing a few squirts of Nature Box™ Apricot Body Oil and rubbing it into my driest areas and I notice a significant difference. The apricot oil is wonderful for softening and moisturizing skin without feeling greasy and heavy.

For hands, Nature Box™ Macadamia Oil Hand Cream is a great option. Macadamia oil is especially beneficial for nourishing, irritated and dry skin. I keep this on my nightstand and massage into hands and cuticles every night. For extra moisturizing, hydrate feet with body butter before bed and put on a pair of cotton socks to help lock in additional moisture.

Use a Humidifier

Having the furnace and heater blasting hot air further zaps any moisture from the air, so running a humidifier is a great way to add some additional moisture to your home.

Hydrate From The Inside Out

In the cooler months, it can be easy to forgo water and reach for a hot coffee or tea instead. Both coffee and tea contain caffeine and are diuretics that can cause you to pee more often and excrete more water. Aim to drink 8+ cups of water a day (hot water with lemon and honey is a great alternative to coffee/tea). Add more nutrient-rich and high water content foods to your diet to supplement as well (watermelon, broth soups, cucumbers, oranges, and tomatoes are just a few options).

Exfoliate As Needed

While you definitely don’t want to overdue exfoliating in the winter months as it can irritate and dry skin if done too often, exfoliating occasionally is great for helping to remove dull, dry skin cells. Exfoliating allows your skin to more readily absorb moisturizers and leaves skin with a more glowing complexion.

Cover Up

When you venture into the cold, don’t forget to cover up! Harsh winter temperatures, bustling wind, and snow can wreak havoc on your skin. Wear hands, gloves, and scarves to provide skin a barrier from the harsh conditions. Also, don’t forget your sunscreen! Just because the weather is cooler, it doesn’t mean that the sun still can’t damage your skin.

For your winter skin needs, check out Nature Box™ products!
