7 Ways to Mindfully De-Stress Your Body and Mind

Everyday life is busy and now that the holidays are quickly approaching stress begins to climb for most of us. We’re making lists, planning menu’s, hopping from one holiday party to the next, writing Christmas cards, shopping, and the list continues. While stress can be good in small amounts, more often than not it can bring us down and take away from our joy.

Help manage and minimize stress this holiday season (and year round) with these simple steps:

Just Start

All those thoughts running through your head about what needs to be done can be overwhelming. In those moments, simply just start. Start anywhere. Often times taking that first step can be the catalyst for becoming more productive and lowering your stress. I like to start with small tasks to get myself going and usually that fuels my desire to knock a few more items off my to do list.

Make a List (and check it twice)

Instead of letting that list take over your mind and leave you feeling fuzzy, write it down. Make a running list with all the things that you need or want to get done and slowly work your way through it. Each day, choose 3 “must do” items and focus on those. Anything else is a bonus! Also worth noting, be sure to recognize your need and wants in the list. Sometimes there are things that don’t really need to be done, but are things you want to do.

Delegate

Delegate items off your to do. Accept help when offered and don’t be afraid to ask others for help. Feeling overwhelmed about cleaning your house in time for the holidays? Hire a cleaning service. Don’t feel like wrapping presents? Take them to a paper wrapping fundraiser.

Live in the Moment

It is so easy to get wrapped up in all things holidays: family squabbles, planning parties, holiday shopping, grief, budget, and so on, that we often fail to pause and enjoy the current moment because we are so stuck thinking about everything we need to do in the future. When visitors come to our home, there is nothing more that I love to do than brew a carafe of coffee to enjoy while sitting down and connecting with others. There’s just something so soothing and relaxing about a warm cup and great conversation.

This holiday season I’ve stocked up on Barnie’s Santa’s White Christmas. It’s the perfect blend of coconut, caramel and roasted nuts that simply embodies the flavors of the season so well (and goes so well with yummy cookies too). For over 37 years, this has been a favorite amongst coffee aficionados and it’s definitely will be a new addition for years to come to our Christmas traditions. I’ve even bought a few extra’s to keep around for last minute holiday gifts (they also have other blends, gift packages and a ton of blended teas too to make gift buying super easy)!

Schedule Time to Relax

Don’t forget to take care of yourself during the holiday madness. If it takes you scheduling time for yourself in your planner to make it happen, do it. A little “me time” and self-care is so important to allow yourself to unwind and release some of the tension and stress. Even just 15 minutes of “you time” can make a world of difference. A few me time activities: enjoying a hot bath, sitting down with a hot coffee and catching up on your favorite magazine, enjoy a favorite show, meditation, go for a massage and so on.

Let Go and Forget About Perfection

Let go of the thought that everything has to be perfect. Perfection is nearly impossible, especially with so many external factors that come into play during the holidays. When you look back you aren’t going to remember all the details of your tablescape, but you’ll remember the connection, conversations and laughter you had with family and friends.

Exercise

Exercise helps to relieve stress and releases lots of feel good endorphins that help to lift your spirits. Staying active during the holidays helps to offset all those yummy holiday foods too!

What’s one of your favorite ways to unwind after a stressful day?

This is a great reminder — especially this time of year! I have a hard time delegating but I have finally learned to do so. It came hand in hand with learning to let go. Perfection is far less important than a happy mama!!
