I remember the first time that I had an asthma attack. It was in my early years of college and I was out on a training run for an upcoming race. I was several miles into my run and away from home and suddenly found myself gasping on the side of the road for my breath. As panic began to set in, I knew that I had to calm myself or the situation was only going to get worse. I managed to calm my breathing through long slow breaths that calmed my mind, slowed my gasping until my symptoms began to subside and I was able to finally breathe normal again. While I was able to get it under control this time, I knew then that I never wanted to feel that way again and that it was something that I needed to discuss with my doctor.
At the time of my first attack, I had medical insurance so I went in and was diagnosed with intermittent asthma that was exercise induced or made worse with cold air and allergens. I was able to get an inhaler to be used as needed from my doctor. When it came time to get another inhaler, I realized that my prescription had expired and I no longer had medical insurance. I didn’t have the resources to pay for another doctors visit to get a new prescription and the high out of pocket cost for a prescription inhaler wasn’t an option at the time. I was stuck at a cross-roads and beyond worried because the thought of not having an inhaler to use when needed absolutely freaked me out, but I also didn’t have the money available to see and pay for a doctor as I had no health insurance.
As I chatted with a friend, she told me about Primatene® MIST. It was such a relief to be able to purchase an inhaler over the counter when I was unable to see my doctor. It was so helpful when I was having asthma issues to help restore my breathing and start to feel relief of symptoms (wheezing, tightness of chest, shortness of breath). I continued to use Primatene® MIST for many years to help manage my asthma symptoms and was so thankful that this was an easily accessible and cost-friendly option.
That’s why I’m so happy that Primatene® MIST is available over the counter—to help me breathe easier. Primatene® MIST is the only FDA approved, over the counter asthma inhaler for temporary relief of mild symptoms of intermittent asthma. The new inhaler is a CFC-free metered dose inhaler and even has a built-in spray meter to show how many sprays you have left so you’re never surprised with an empty canister. With the cool temperatures and allergens amping up, I definitely made sure to have one on hand!
Primatene® MIST can be purchased in the following stores: CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens & Walmart and online at CVS, Walgreens and Walmart. To learn more about Primatene® MIST, click here for more info and to see where to buy.

So interesting this is available over the counter now. I had asthma as a kid too!
Thank you for sharing your story! I’m glad this is easily accessible being over the counter now, this will definitely help a lot of people!
I have been fortunate to never have had an asthma attack but my husband has to use one every so often. If we didnt have great health insurance, it would be so hard to be able to afford it! So nice that you can get one over the counter now.
Such a great over the counter solution for those with asthma. Allergy season is always the worst!
I don’t have asthma but so glad this over-the-counter option is available to those that do – especially during allergy season!
