Cold Weather Lip Care Tips to Prevent Dry and Chapped Lips

This post is sponsored by Burt’s Bees, but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Cold temperatures, gusty winds and running the furnace nonstop are all culprits when it comes to dry skin and lips. With cool weather settling in, taking care of your skin especially your lips, needs to be a priority to avoid dry, cracked and painful lips. The skin on your lips is particularly vulnerable to dryness during these cool months as the skin is extremely thin and there are very few oil glands when compared to skin in other areas of your body. Add in cold temperatures, ultra-dry air (running the heater all the time zaps moisture out of the air), and it’s the perfect storm for chapped and painful lips.

Cold Weather Lip Care Tips to Prevent Dry and Chapped Lips:

Use A Natural Lip Butter Often

Using lip products with high quality and ultra-moisturizing ingredients is a must! Using a lip butter helps keep your lips moisturized by locking in moisture, providing a barrier to dry and cold environmental factors and by providing moisturization throughout the day.

My favorite lip butters are Burt’s Bees Lip Butters made with 100% responsibly sourced shea butter, cocoa butter and other natural ingredients! The ultra-creamy and 100% natural lip butters lock in moisture, provide a great barrier to environmental factors that can dry your lips and have super moisturizing butters to keep my lips smooth and moisturized. The botanical blends (Vanilla Clove, Lavender & Honey, Orange & Pistachio, Rosemary & Lemon) go on lightweight and smoothly with a soft sheen which makes them perfect for everyday wear (can be used under and over lipsticks too).

I always stock up on a bunch so that I can have them available to use often throughout the day. I always keep one in my purse, car, desk and next to my bed so I always have it nearby. Having a lip product made with natural ingredients is a must for me — I don’t want to be worried about using (and potentially ingesting) anything questionable!

You can find Burt’s Bees Lip Butters at Ulta Beauty or Ulta.com!

Drink More Water

Hydrate your lips (and skin) from the inside out! Make sure you’re drinking water throughout the day to keep your lips hydrated.

Stop Lip Licking

If you notice that your constantly licking your lips, do your best to stop! The constant lip licking will only cause your lips to become even drier. Break the habit by keeping a lip butter on hand and apply it as soon as the lip licking urge strikes.

Keep Skin Covered

Protect your lips and skin from the elements by keeping them covered. When heading outdoors, zip your coat up to protect your skin and add a stylish (and functional scarf) to pull up over your mouth to keep out the ultra drying cool temps and skin-drying wind.

Use A Humidifier

Running the furnace often can zap the air of moisture. Using a humidifier can be a great and simple way to add moisture to the air. For those with littles ones, make sure to only use cool-air humidifiers for safety reasons.

Check Ingredients In Your Products

As always, I like to keep my products natural when possible and to be aware of ingredients that can be irritating. Using lip balms and butters with the right ingredients, like hydrating butters, is a must! Burt’s Bees Lip Butters contain shea and cocoa butter to help seal in moisture, heal damaged lips and protect lips. For some, sunscreens can cause allergic reactions so it’s something to be aware of (Burt’s Bees Lip Butters are sunscreen-free). Another bonus: the jars are easy to open and fully recyclable (yay for sustainability)!

Scrub Away Dead Skin (But Don’t Pick)

As tempting as it can be, avoid picking at skin whenever possible. Picking at dry skin with your fingers or teeth will only make the situation worse and can cause cracks, cuts and scabs – a major bummer!

For regular lip care maintenance, a sugar scrub can be a great way to gently exfoliate your lips. You can make your own with a mixture of sugar, coconut oil and honey. Make a paste with ingredients, gently rub on lips to remove dead skin and remove. Follow up with Burt’s Bees Lip Butter to lock in moisture.

Give Your Lips Some TLC Every Night

Get into the habit of using lip butter before bedtime! Using it before bed gives your lips some extra moisturizing TLC and helps protect your lips while you sleep (especially those who are mouth-breathers). Slather on your favorite lip butter (the Lavender & Honey is ultra relaxing for nighttime use) before you hit the hay to wake up to moisturized and soft lips!
