We all know the feeling: you’ll be busy all morning slashing items off your to-do list, you eat lunch, continue on with your productive self when suddenly, BOOM! You’re sitting there nodding off at your desk or a quick sit down on the couch turned into a 3pm snooze session.

The midday slump can be a real downer sometimes and that crushing fatigue can often strike out of nowhere. While I’m a big fan of the afternoon nap, let’s be honest – most days it’s just not a possibility. Whether I have pressing work deadlines, dinner to prep or most recently, distance learning with my kiddos to conquer, a nap isn’t always an option so I’ve had to adapt and find natural ways to push through the midday fatigue.

The good news is that there are a lot of pretty simple and natural ways to help beat the midday slump and energize your body to climb over that fatigue mountain and keep on, keeping on. I’m sharing a few of my favorite natural hacks that help give me a boost of energy to help me stay productive and on task + a bonus yoga energizing flow that is sure to give you a surge of energy!

Hacks to Beat The Midday Slump:

Skip The Coffee, Chug The Water

If you’re anything like me, my mornings are spent attached to my coffee mug. While I love coffee, I try to avoid having too much in the afternoon. While it gives you a bit of an immediate jolt, you also quickly crash leaving you feeling exhausted and tired. Making sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, and especially if you’re attached to your morning brew, can be a game changer for keeping your energy levels moderated. Dehydration can affect concentration and make you feel foggy so up your water intake for a natural source of energy.

Eat For Sustained Energy

What you eat to fuel your body makes a HUGE difference in how you feel! Without fail, every afternoon when I start to feel a little tired, I noticed that it’s been a few hours since I last ate and my blood sugar levels are starting to decline. Eating healthy snacks that are loaded with nutrients to provide sustained energy is a must! I recently started adding Nature Valley™ Packed™ Sustained Energy Bars to the mix and they are great for giving me long-lasting energy that I need to get through my busy days.

Nature Valley’s new energy bars are packed with nutrient rich ingredients like creamy nut butter, crunchy nuts & seeds such as almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds or peanuts and chewy cranberries or blueberries. These ingredients provide a healthy dose of complex carbs, healthy fats, fiber to keep you satiated and natural sugars to provide sustained energy to push through the afternoon slump. I love the delicious taste and the multi-texture combination of creamy, crunchy and chewy goodness always satisfies.

I’ve been keeping a box of the Nature Valley™ Packed™ sustained energy bars in my desk so I can grab one whenever I feel those midday slumps coming on (plus, it’s a good hiding spot from my kids for when I don’t want to share). I love both varieties, but the Peanut Butter & Cranberry is so addictively good! You can find them here.

Sunlight

Open those blinds, work near a window or go outside to soak up the rays! Fresh air is energizing and soaking up natural vitamin D (don’t forget your sunscreen) can be a major mood and energy lifter – and vitamin D is a great easy way to add a little immune support too.

Move Your Body

While it doesn’t sound like the most exciting thing to do when you’re already low on energy, pushing through and moving your body is a great way to boost your energy. Exercising releases all those feel good endorphins to not only give you an energy boost but also improves your mood too! Whether it’s a short walk, taking a break to lift some weights or a short energizing yoga flow, getting up and moving your body is a simple way to improve your energy and add some wellness to your daily routine.

Y’all know that I love yoga and it’s my go to for all of life’s needs! There are some amazing poses that are great for providing an all natural energy boost – many of which are heart openers!  A few great energizing poses that can give you a much needed boost are (in order of intensity):

  • Cat/Cow
  • Downward Facing Dog
  • Cobra or Upward Facing Dog
  • Warrior poses
  • Wide Legged Forward Fold
  • Camel or Half Camel (can modify with hands on lower back for support)
  • Bridge (can place block under sacrum for support) or Wheel

I’ve even included a little flow below that is perfect for fighting the afternoon slump that is packed with feel-good and energy boosting poses! Put on some good tunes and enjoy this 25 minute flow:

Add some uplifting essential oils to your diffuser, play your favorite upbeat tunes, pop in a stick of minty gum, or open a window for a burst of cool breeze to kick your senses into overdrive for a natural shot of energy.
