Using wallpaper to transform a room can be a great way to add personality, style, and visual interest to a space! When it came to finally decorating and styling our oldest bedroom, I knew that I really wanted to make a statement with a bold and fun wall mural in a forest theme. We had used Photowall wallpaper murals in the past for our living room and absolutely loved the results and high-quality of their product so I knew that I wanted to use their products again. Photowall makes it so easy to install with clear directions and you can customize the mural size and orientation based on your room measurements. Since they have so many different designs to choose from, we knew it would be easy to find something that fit the space that we were envisioning. You can even order sample pieces to test out the wallpaper before committing to it which is super helpful.

For our sons bedroom, we chose Foggy Forest (which comes in several different color schemes). Foggy Forest is a stunning picture of a mysterious, dense forest will be perfect for cultivating a calm space and a great theme that he will continue to enjoy for years to come. Since we don’t plan to redecorate his room for several years, we really wanted to make sure to find something that would transition well as he heads into his pre-teen years (he’s 9 now). This wallpaper mural is moody without being too dark and perfect for a nature loving kiddo!

If you’re thinking about adding wallpaper to help transform a space, here are some steps to guide you through the process.

How To Use Wallpaper to Transform a Room:

1. Plan and visualize

Start by considering the overall look and feel you want to achieve in the room. Browse through different wallpaper designs, patterns, and colors to find inspiration. Create a mood board or collect samples to help you visualize how the wallpaper will work with your existing furniture, decor, and color scheme.

2. Measure the walls: Accurately measure the dimensions of the walls you plan to wallpaper. This will help you determine how much wallpaper you need to purchase. Be sure to account for doors, windows, and any architectural features that might affect the amount of wallpaper required.

2. Prepare the room

Remove any existing wallpaper, clean the walls, and repair any imperfections such as cracks or holes. Smooth out the surface by sanding if necessary. Ensure that the walls are dry and in good condition before proceeding.

3. Gather your supplies

Purchase the required amount of wallpaper, adhesive or paste (if not pre-pasted), a smoothing brush or squeegee, a wallpaper knife or scissors, a tape measure, and a plumb line or level. It’s essential to use the right type of adhesive or paste recommended by the wallpaper manufacturer. If you use Photowall, they send you the supplies and adhesive needed to install their wallpaper.

4. Start from the left

Begin applying the wallpaper on the left side of the room. Use a plumb line or level to ensure that the first strip is straight. Apply adhesive or paste to the wall and start applying your wallpaper strips.

5. Hang the wallpaper

Align the first strip of wallpaper with the plumb line and smooth it onto the wall, starting from the top and working your way down. Use a smoothing brush or squeegee to eliminate air bubbles and ensure a smooth application. Trim any excess wallpaper at the ceiling, baseboards, and corners using a wallpaper knife or scissors.

6. Continue with subsequent strips

Repeat the process for the remaining strips of wallpaper, making sure to match the patterns and edges accurately. Apply adhesive or paste as needed and smooth each strip carefully. Take your time to ensure a seamless and professional-looking result.

7. Finishing touches

Once all the wallpaper is applied, inspect the room for any air bubbles or imperfections. Smooth them out with a smoothing brush or needle, being careful not to damage the wallpaper. Clean off any excess adhesive or paste with a damp sponge.

8. Enjoy your transformed room

Allow the wallpaper to dry completely before moving furniture back into the room or adding any additional decor. Step back and admire the beautiful transformation you’ve achieved with wallpaper.

While we still have lots of updating and decorating to do in his room, we are loving how the wallpaper transformed his room! It was easy to install and made such a “wow” statement that we love. Once we add some new bedding, lights and decor, his room will be complete and perfectly updated.

Remember, patience, attention to detail, and careful execution will help you achieve a stunning room transformation with wallpaper. Installing wallpaper can feel overwhelming, but it’s actually a great DIY option that is obtainable for most! I highly recommend using Photowall as they make the process so easy, have thousands of designs and murals to choose from and the wallpaper is extremely high-quality and durable!
