One of my major goals this year is to make the move to using much more natural and responsible beauty products and brands! It’s been a slow transition, but I’ve found some amazing replacements for most of my skincare routine and have slowly been working towards finding hair care products to replace less than ideal hair care products. One of my most recent favorite finds are Spring and Vine shampoo bars! I’m sharing all about my experience of making the switch to shampoo bars, including tips for using them and everything you need to know to ditch the bottle.

While shampoo bars may be new to most of us, in reality they’ve been around for years. Shampoo bars used to be the norm back in the 50’s, before plastic packaging became the norm, but have recently garnered tons of buzz as they are a more sustainable, plant-based and eco-conscious options. A few months ago, I was working on an “empties” post to highlight the skin/makeup/hair care products I had used within the month. At the end of the month, I was struck with how much plastic and waste there was. It was the momentum that I needed to really push my clean beauty and eco-conscious habits into overdrive to make some major changes. Seeing all those plastic bottles made me take a look into more sustainable options for beauty and led me to giving shampoo bars a try.

I’ve been using Spring & Vine shampoo bars for the last few weeks and they’re my new go-to hair care product that I can feel good about using! Spring & Vine was started by a woman in the beauty industry who was frustrated with the lack of options for clean and responsible hair care products. Spring & Vine shampoo bars are made with only PETA-certified cruelty free & vegan ingredients for a more natural beauty experience that leaves your hair cleaning and healthy. Their bars are in minimal packaging to further reduce their environmental impact too! When it comes to my beauty products, convenience is key so I love that they are available exclusively at Target (and target.com) for easy purchasing.

Spring & Vine Shampoo Bars are crafted with shea butter and essentials oils that leave your hair feeling clean, healthy and moisturized. They have 4 different blends to choose from depending on your needs and preferences (the scalp soothing is my favorite for my dry skin):

  • Volumizing – Grapefruit & Rosemary
  • Moisturizing2 in 1– Oatmeal
  • Scalp Soothing – Tea Tree & Mint
  • Balanced Clean – Lavender & Orange Blossom

After using conventional liquid shampoos for so long, there was a bit of a learning curve to using bar shampoo. The first time it felt so weird to use a bar for my hair, but after a bit of experimenting I found that they were simple to use, lathered well and left hair feeling smooth and clean.

How To Use

When it comes to shampoo bars there are 2 different options for how to use them:

Create Lather in Your Hands

Once you’ve wet your hair and scalp, rub the bar vigorously between hands to create lather. Massage lather into your scalp and use your hands as a comb to move the lather through your hair. Continue to massage and rinse very well.

Use Bar Directly on Hair

Wet hair and scalp well and gently run the shampoo bar on scalp and over hair in a smooth motion from roots towards ends to avoid creating tangles. Continue on each section of hair until a thick lather forms (you may need to add small amounts of water). Massage into scalp. Rinse well.

My personal preferences is to use the bar directly on my scalp/hair and to move the lather through my hair from roots to ends. I get a nice, thick lather that easily washes out.

Not only do Spring & Vine Shampoo Bars leave your hair feeling healthier, but there are so many other great benefits that come with making the switch to using shampoo bars.

REASONS TO DITCH THE BOTTLE AND USE SHAMPOO BARS:

More Sustainable

Mother Earth is drowning in plastic use and this is such an easy way to decrease your plastic use. Spring & Vine supports sustainable beauty by using up to 95% less plastic* and up to 90% less water* in the packaging and production of their shampoo bars.

Concentrated Formula

Each Spring & Vine shampoo bar lasts as long as a traditional 12.6 ounce shampoo bottle. To prolong the use of your bar, make sure to get a well draining soap dish (this is what I use) and keep out of shower spray.

Travel Friendly

Shampoo bars are so convenient to travel with! There are no worries about them leaking in your suitcase and not having to worry about TSA liquid limits.

Cruelty-Free & Natural Ingredients

Spring & Vine shampoo bars are made with natural ingredients, PETA certified cruelty-free and vegan! They’re free of sulfates, parabens, silicones, dyes, phthalates, mineral oils and synthetic fragrances to provide a natural beauty experience. Many traditional hair care products contain chemicals and preservatives that can have detrimental effects on our environment and that can also be abrasive to hair and scalp. Instead of using synthetics fragrances, they use essential oils for more natural and responsible shampoo bars.
