Seven Power Packed Greens You Need in Your Diet + Iced Matcha Latte Recipe

Most of us have heard about green juices by now, but how much do you really know about what’s in them or why they are healthy? I’ve really been looking into adding more supplements and eating a cleaner diet lately and one thing that I keep reading consistently is the importance of getting the correct amount of vegetables, specifically greens for optimal health. While I love fresh press green juices, they can get expensive if they are being consumed daily. Since I can’t depend on grabbing a fresh pressed green juice every day to meet my greens quota, I’ve been looking into other ways of doing so and will be sharing one of my favorite ways with you all below.

Why Consume Greens?

Greens are so important when it comes to many aspects of our health! Below are a few of the detrimental effects from insufficient vegetable intake:

  • Cardiovascular disease: 11% of deaths are from ischemic heart disease.
  • Weakened immune system: less effective at fighting disease and illness.
  • Weight gain: lack of nutrients leads to body inefficiently burning unused energy.
  • Unhealthy skin conditions: dry, rough and dull skin.
  • Intestinal issues: lack of fiber can cause constipation.
  • Premature aging: lack of antioxidants can make it difficult to fight free-radicals which lead to aging.

Seven Must-Have Greens in Your Diet

1. Young Barley Leaf

Young Barley Leaf is a powerhouse! It’s loaded with nearly twice as much iron as kale, five times more Vitamin C than spinach, 10 times more calcium than milk, and more dietary fiber than broccoli or spinach.

2. Ashitaba

Ashitaba has five times more dietary fiber than lettuce, five times more Vitamin E than carrots, and more beta-carotene and calcium than spinach. It also contains chalcone, a powerful and valuable polyphenol. Some evidence exists that polyphenols help prevent health dangers such as cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

3. Matcha

Matcha is rich in polyphenols, folic acids, and amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins which are so important when it comes to healing and muscle building (especially in athletes).

4. Sencha

Sencha is loaded with catechin (powerful antioxidants) and folic acids.

5. Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass contains high amounts of chlorophyll which is thought to have many health benefits, such as increased red blood-cell count, detoxification of blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract, increased metabolism.

6. Spirulina

Spirulina is a great source for plant protein! Spirulina is also high in iron and calcium. Spirulina is great for additional energy and strength.

7. Chlorella

Chlorella is a green algae super high in protein and healthy polyunsaturated fats.

I try my best to eat a full and varied diet, but still find that I struggle and stress about making sure that my body is getting all the nutrients it needs from a traditional diet. Lately I’ve been loving Kiwami Greens!

Kiwami Greens is a traditional Japanese (aojiro) green blend that is known for it’s exceptional nutritious properties. It’s loaded with a ton of super greens that research has shown to have great health benefits and they are pumped full of so many great nutrients and vitamins (see more below).  Kiwami Greens is made with a ton of the super power packed and nutritious greens that I chatted about above: young barley leaf, ashitaba, and combined with matcha and sencha and can easily be added to the food and drinks that you already consume. Aside from the powerful greens, Kiwami Greens also contains prebiotics and EMIQ (Enzymatically Modified Isoquercitrin) to aid in proper absorption.

I simply add a Kiwami Greens packet to one of my drinks (water, milk, juice, smoothie, even yogurt) daily and drink! My absolute favorite way of drinking it is as an iced latte and I’m sharing the recipe below!

These greens are such an easy way to complement my every day healthy lifestyle to health meet my vegetable quota and improve my health. I love the convenience of being able to take it on the go, especially when I’m traveling and unable to follow my every day routine.
