The weathers cooling and that means one thing…latte time! While I love coffee, sometimes I want to switch it up and drink something that not only taste good but offers some extra nutritional support too. This recipe for spirulina maca latte combines some powerhouse superfood supplements, spirulina and maca root, that have had a ton of buzz lately in the health and nutritional world.

Spirulina maca latte gets it gorgeous green hue from spirulina, a nutrient-dense blue-green algae. Spirulina is very protein dense, contains a plethora of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin A, B, D, E, copper and iron), antioxidants and amino acids.

Aside from a nutritional punch of many vitamins some studies have shown other great health benefits such as:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Increased muscle recovery and endurance
  • Great source of energy (which is something that most of us can always use!).

Gram for gram, spirulina has been called one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth!

Maca root has gained a ton of traction this past year for it’s adaptogen properties which help the body adapt to stressors (such as jobs, motherhood, overloaded schedules, etc.).

Maca has also been shown to be great for:

  • Sexual health (both female and male)
  • Balancing estrogen levels
  • Improving mood
  • Increased energy.

For those that haven’t used maca before, I always recommend starting with a small amount to see how your body reacts (some people are very sensitive to it). Maca always gives me an energy boost that’s similar to coffee, but without the jitters or intense energy drop.

Spirulina is one of those tricky foods that has a pretty intense green taste. It’s one of those foods that I like to throw in a smoothie to help hide the taste, but it combines surprisingly well with the richness of maca, spices and sweetness of this latte for a smooth tasting drink.
